Who are patient navigators?

Patient navigators are professionals specifically dedicated to helping patients navigate the often complex healthcare system. They provide support by assisting patients in accessing healthcare services, understanding their treatment options, and coping with the logistical and emotional challenges that may arise during their healthcare journey. This role is crucial as it addresses barriers patients may face, such as scheduling appointments, understanding health insurance benefits, or finding appropriate resources.

While healthcare providers do assess patient needs, that role primarily focuses on the clinical aspects of care and direct patient treatment, rather than the broader navigation of healthcare services. Conducting patient interviews is part of the information-gathering process, but it does not encompass the full scope of a navigator's responsibilities. Lastly, insurance agents manage claims and help with insurance-related concerns, but they do not provide direct assistance in navigating healthcare services and resources like patient navigators do.
